Helpful Hints

  • Even small drips can waste thousands of gallons of water. Avoid paying for wasted water by repairing leaky faucets and avoid water damage to fixtures and pipes.

  • As winter approaches, remove all hoses connected to outside faucets. This will drain your faucet and avoid freezing pipes.

  • At least once a year check your toilet for leaks by adding a small amount of food coloring to the tank. If after checking the bowl later you find the water is colored, then you have a leak.

  • Drain water heaters annually to remove sediment that can cause a noisy and less efficient water heater.

  • Avoid drain openers (Draino or Liquid Plumber) on completely clogged drains. These can get trapped in your pipes and severely damage them.

  • Do not rinse fats or cooking oils down kitchen sinks. Liquid fats solidify in the cold pipes and create clogs.
